Student Learning Goals


We expect students completing our program to emerge with the following skills:

  • Apply the holistic and comparative perspective inherent in anthropological knowledge to real world problems
  • Demonstrate leadership and teamwork in a diverse environment
  • Undertake data collection and analysis ‑both quantitative and qualitative‑specific to all four subfields of anthropology
  • Use information resources and technology to research current issues in all four subfields of anthropology
  • Apply critical thinking and reading to current issues in anthropology
  • Communicate through writing in an effective manner characterized by clarity, insight, the proper citation of sources and strict adherence to the basic rules of grammar, syntax, and spelling
  • Synthesize and integrate theoretical perspectives specific to anthropology and general to the social and natural sciences
  • Function in an ethical manner with respect to human and animal participants in research, colleagues, and students

Students completing our program will have competency in the following subject areas:

  • History of anthropological thought and anthropological theory

  • Research design and methods
  • Evolutionary theory and the history of humankind and the nonhuman primates
  • Cultural relativism and cultural identity
  • Human communication and language
  • Recovery and interpretation of past human activity
  • Interrelatedness between humans and ecological systems
  • Ethics
