Dr. Steven James, Dr. Hilarie Kelly & Dr. Barbra Erickson

Honored in the Category of Service to Students

Barbara Erickson

Dr. Erickson provides outstanding service to students in a variety of ways. She keeps many more office hours than required; her office environment is warm and welcoming to students. She does countless grad checks and has the highest number of advisees in the department at both the undergraduate and graduate level. She has been the advisor for the Anthropology Students Association for several years. She regularly attends their meetings to offer guidance and advice. She effectively communicates with both past and current students through her extensive database. She chairs the department's web committee and maintains it with current information. Last summer she sponsored a student to accompany her on a grant-funded trip to do research in radon mines. She is generous with her ideas and time. She creates an air of accessibility and welcome that transforms the Anthropology department from an office to a center of learning and exploration.

Honored in the Category of Service to the University

Steven James

Since joining the faculty in 2003, Steven James has dedicated himself to scholarly work that includes students. By developing field schools on San Nicholas Island and in Sedona, Arizona, he has transformed the archaeology program at CSUF into a major center for archaeological studies. These field schools, where students learn and implement excavation techniques, have strengthened the archaeology curriculum tremendously and this, off course, serves students. In addition, these field schools result in students interacting with personnel from several outside agencies; this exposure provides a network of connections for students that would not be possible with on campus instruction alone. Dr. James is the primary advisor for nearly two dozen graduate students specializing in archaeology. Further, he recently organized a symposium on archaeology with seven graduate students; these students will present their papers in April at the annual meeting of the Southwestern Anthropological Association.

Honored in the Category of Service to the External Community

Hilarie Kelly

In addition to extensive service activities on campus, Hilarie Kelly provides commendable and valuable service to the external professional community and to our local communities. She is a board member for the Society for Urban, National, and Transnational Anthropology (a subunit of the American Anthropological Association). She is a regular speaker for community groups. For example, she has recently been a lecturer for the Huntington Library Women's Studies Seminar Program, addressed attendees at a Summer Institute organized by the African Studies Center for the Los Angeles Unified School District, and addressed the Girl Scout Council of Orange colleges, serving to build the connections and partnerships between Cal State Fullerton and other institutions of higher education.
