Course Description:
This course involves excavations at the prehistoric pueblo of Honanki near Sedona, Arizona, as part of a joint research project with archaeologists from the Coconino National Forest.

Students will learn archaeological excavation methods and techniques, archaeological survey techniques, and the identification of archaeological materials including ceramics, lithics, and other artifacts, as well as archaeofaunal and archaeobotanical remains.

Honanki is a large, two-story prehistoric pueblo ruin built by the Southern Sinagua during the 12th and 13th centuries A.D. It is the type site for the Honanki phase. The site is located in the spectacular Red Rock Country west of the town of Sedona, on the edge of the Verde Valley in northern Arizona.

The field camp will be at a historic ranch near Honanki Pueblo. Food and lodging will be provided as part of the fees for the course. Field trips to other pueblo sites in the area will be arranged. Students will provide their own transportation to the field camp; carpooling is recommended.
